Safya Biswal

Cox Enterprises Scholarship ($10,000)

Safya Biswal is a graduating senior at Jackson-Reed High School. She will be attending the University of Michigan next year, planning to major in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. At Jackson-Reed, Safya was an honors graduate of the Academy of Health Sciences, receiving a NAF certification of completion. She served as President of the Academy of Health Sciences in her senior year, in addition to her roles as Blood Drive Organizer, Peer Mentor, and Tutor. For the past two years, she has been the captain of Jackson Reed’s Girls Ultimate Frisbee Team and will continue to play at the University of Washington. Safya is passionate about giving back to the community, volunteering her time to tutor her peers, and serving as a teaching assistant for a US History course. Safya has maintained a 4.35 GPA and has earned over 150 hours of community service. She is currently a research intern at the National Institutes of Health, experimenting with innovative methods of gene therapy. Safya hopes to pursue a career in research, inspired by her passion for innovation and knowledge.
