Mery Jans Vergara Sanchez is a senior at Duke Ellington School of the Arts and will be attending the University of Rochester. She is passionate about conducting and advancing research to discover solutions that support marginalized communities. She plans to major in Public Health with a minor in Korean. During her time at Duke Ellington, she has performed in plays addressing gun violence at the Kennedy Center, raised funds for arts integration in schools, and founded an organization that collects and distributes books to incarcerated individuals. She also interned at the National Women’s Foundation, researching influential women in politics. Mery’s extensive community involvement has focused on healthcare equity. She has volunteered at Sibley Memorial Hospital and shadowed professionals at Mary’s Center. Through her efforts, she hopes to travel the world, assess communities, and improve access to medical resources.
